Welcome

Story Booth is a series hosted by the Department of Humanities and Politics (DHP) and the NSU Center for the Humanities that fosters community and diverse cultural and social expressions through an understanding and appreciation of global literatures and languages. Stories are universal and they help us to make sense of the world by sharing our experiences. Story Booth partners with student organizations across the university to hear how each of us makes meaning. From remembering our first stories to conversations about the power--good and bad--of fiction, Story Booth connects us.

Ban Me celebrates banned stories by asking students to share their own "banned" content. What does it mean to be banned? Censorship is supposed to help prevent the spread of misinformation and abusive expressions, but it can also suppress individuals’ and groups’ rights and freedoms. Stories can be banned for a variety of reasons. The most common are due to excessive violence, offensive language, and sexually explicit content. Although there are countless reasons for banning books, parents and schools challenge books the most.

This site is a virtual library of creations collected from Nova Southeastern University students participating in the Ban Me events of NSU's Story Booth series during October 2020. This past year has been full of experiences that we may not yet have had a chance to process or express. The site shares what NSU students have to say, what they have seen and experienced this past year.

Welcome to our library of banned stories. If you are interested in learning more about banned books, please see our resources page and feel free to contact us at humanities@nova.edu. Enjoy!
